Where Is The

Living Church?

I mentioned earlier that the church is divided. Clearly this is not the vision that Jesus had for his church. But why is unity so important? I think one of the main reasons is that unity is meant to lead evangelism. Look at Jesus' prayer in John 17. “May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” Christ wanted unity so that the world may know about him. And this makes complete sense to me. How could a broken church heal a broken world? And the church truly is broken. Its pieces are scattered all throughout the denominations.

In 1 John we read, “No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.” The church is the only visible manifestation of Jesus in the world. And God's love is made complete in the church. The world knows God's love through the church's love. When people go to church, they should find God. They should see Jesus.

The church isn't just an organization, it's an organism. It is the body of Christ himself. Paul makes this incredible claim in 1 Corinthians. I'll let you read it for yourself.
